As Series 9’s launch approaches, rumors abound in the world of Apple Watch accessories, particularly regarding the future of its beloved leather bands. Speculators have fueled many rumors lately, driven by Apple’s upcoming special event where they will unveil new products. While many have focused their discussions on potential replacements for iPhone leather cases, it appears that Apple might similarly discontinue its leather bands for the Apple Watch.

According to the renowned Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is poised to “move away from leather on its Apple Watch bands,” mirroring the rumors surrounding the demise of leather in iPhone 15 cases. This shift may have implications that extend beyond material choices, potentially signaling the conclusion of the longstanding collaboration between Apple and luxury brand Hermès, which commenced in 2015.

Gurman provides a clue to this impending change – Apple has been offering substantial discounts of up to 90% on Hermès leather bands to its employees. Historically, such deep discounts have heralded the discontinuation of products, as Apple demonstrated with the original HomePod’s fate in 2021.

9to5Mac reported last week that several official Apple Watch leather bands, including the Modern Buckle and Hermès models (all leather-based), have vanished from Apple’s website, further fueling the rumors. Even the classic Link Bracelet, which made its debut alongside the original Apple Watch, is conspicuously absent.

Apple Watch leather band speculations

While speculation about the gradual phase-out of Hermès Apple Watch leather band surfaced last year but didn’t materialize, this year’s circumstances seem different. Apple typically introduces new colors for Apple Watch bands with each product generation launch. However, the current situation suggests a potentially more dramatic shift in this year’s accessory lineup.

One significant reason behind Apple’s reported abandonment of leather could be its environmental impact, given the considerably high carbon footprint associated with leather production. Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability might be driving this decision to discontinue leather accessories.

Nevertheless, the move raises questions about how Apple plans to satisfy customers who value leather’s premium quality. Will the tech giant leave them high and dry, or will alternative materials come into play? Synthetic leather is one possibility, but indications suggest that Apple is exploring other avenues.

Recently, insiders hinted at Apple’s intention to introduce new iPhone cases crafted from alternative premium materials to replace leather. This speculation was further fueled by leaked images showcasing Apple’s purported “FineWoven” cases for the iPhone 15, featuring a soft fabric material combined with regular silicone.
