At CES 2023, Citizen announced the second generation of its CZ Smart smartwatch, which will not only run on Wear OS 3 but also feature an AI-powered “self-care advisor” that leverages the technology of NASA and IBM Watson.

Citizen’s YouQ app uses AI to determine your Chronotype

The self-care advisor comes in the form of the CZ Smart YouQ app, which uses the neural network developed by IBM Watson to determine a user’s chronotype (whether they are a night owl, early bird, or something in between) after collecting seven to ten days’ worth of sleep data. Further, users can also take short daily gamified tests based on NASA’s Psychomotor Vigilance Test to get an Alert Score, which helps the AI to learn the user’s behaviour.

Based on this data, the YouQ app will learn an individual’s unique rhythms and habits and create a dynamic recognition model to recommend “Power Fixes,” or actions and activities to help the wearer reduce the effects of fatigue, improve alertness, and promote better habits. This concept of personalized suggestions based on the user has become increasingly popular in the last few years. For example, Fitbit and Samsung have similar features, where the watch assigns a cute cartoon animal based on their chronotype and sleep data.

Unfortunately, the CZ Smart YouQ app will not be backwards-compatible, so users will need the second-gen CZ Smartwatch to access this feature.

Specifications and price

The second-gen CZ smartwatch comes in 44mm sport and 41mm casual models with mesh bracelets, links, and silicone straps. In terms of specifications, the watch has a 1.28-inch OLED display, about 24 hours of battery life with a fast-charge time of around 40 minutes, and is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus chip with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It also supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, built-in GPS, and contactless payments, and has motion sensors, a heart rate sensor, and SpO2 sensors for blood oxygen monitoring. In terms of apps, the watch comes preloaded with the YouQ wellness app, Strava, Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon Alexa and runs on Wear OS, working with both iPhone and Android devices.

The CZ Smart watches will go on sale in March 2023 in the US starting at $350 for the casual models and $375 for the sports versions.
