Instagram Reels is reportedly working on a new feature that lets users upload videos as long as 10 minutes. The new time limit for Reels could be good news for content creators on the platform.

Content on social platforms has become more video-driven in recent years. Instead of reading a long text, most users prefer to watch a short video with eye-catching graphics. The modern social platforms, like TikTok, are also built around video. Now, Instagram Reels wants to stretch the limits and allow users to upload up to 10-minute-long videos.

Tipster Alessandro Paluzzi has discovered the feature in the Instagram app. You can now upload up to 90-second-long videos through Reels, and in some cases, the app also allows for up to 3-minute-long videos. The feature only allowed for 15 seconds of videos after its initial launch in 2020.

Instagram Reels is about to get support for 10-minutes-long videos

Yet, it remains to be seen when the feature goes public. However, Meta is reportedly testing it internally, and it might soon land in your Instagram app.

Experts often criticize Instagram for lacking innovation and becoming a clone of TikTok and other social platforms. The Chinese app added support for 10-minute-long videos way before Instagram, and it was well-received by creators. In order to catch up with the competition and not fall behind, Meta has no choice but to bring 10-minute-long videos to Reels.

Allowing users to upload longer videos via Reels is probably good news for content creators. Reels is now a popular tool among creators and news outlets to produce content. A 10-minute-long time limit paves the way for creating more informative and detailed videos.

However, the confusion in decision-making is evident here. The platform already had a feature called IGTV. As a quick reminder, IGTV allowed  users to upload videos as short as 15 seconds and up to 1 hour long. At the time, it was widely believed that this feature could turn Instagram into a rival to YouTube. IGTV was later killed and replaced by other features like Reels.
