While we in the tech industry hold Zach Nelson’s durability tests as the gold standard of how to judge a smartphone’s durability, companies also strive to give us an idea of how tough their devices are. This is the case with the Huawei Mate X3. The company released a new promo video showing that the Mate X3 is built to survive a tumble.

After being kicked out of the cool kids’ table by the US, Huawei is still one of the major smartphone makers in the market. It’s still churning out powerful devices to battle the iPhones and Galaxy devices of the World. It’s continuing to release foldable phones, and the Mate X3 is the latest one.

According to Phone Arena, this phone was the most popular handset in China during Q1 2023. That’s saying a lot seeing as this is a foldable device.

Now, since this promo video uses a lot of cinematography magic, you shouldn’t take this as a faithful representation of what’d happen during a similar event. The 40-second long video shows a Huawei Mate X3 in mid-air during a tumble from the dining room table to the floor. In the process, we see a walnut hitting the display along with a fork and a salt shaker.

Along the way, the phone hits the corner of a chair and smashes right into the ground. Adding insult to injury, a glass of water falls from the table, lands right beside the phone, and douses it in a bunch of water.

After getting a shot of the culprit who perpetrated this disaster (such an evil monster), the owner was able to pick it up, brush off the water, and answer it.

This points to the company putting a lot of elbow grease into making this phone durable. Again, that’s saying a lot for a foldable phone. Foldable phones are known for their versatility and convertibility; they’re not known for their durability. Just remember the disaster that happened in 2019 with the first generation of foldable phones.

Hopefully, the Mate X3 is as sturdy as the company says it is.
