Nintendo has reportedly shared details of the Switch 2 with Activision and it did so as early as 2022. This is according to The Verge who obtained internal emails about the FTC vs. Microsoft case. In these emails, it highlights that Activision was briefed on Nintendo’s plans for the Switch 2 in December of last year.

The emails may or may not have given specific details. It’s tough to say since much of the information has been blacked out. However, it does describe what players would be able to expect from the console in terms of performance. And it appears to match up with recent rumors.

The upcoming Switch 2, or “next-gen Switch” as it was referred to in the emails, would have comparable performance to Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. A compelling thought given the demand from Nintendo fans for a more powerful console.

Internal Activision emails describe making something for the Switch 2

There’s no mention of what games are being referred to in the emails. But they do mention the suggestion of making something for Nintendo’s new console.

It seems likely that the exchange is talking about a Call of Duty game. Since Activision is the Call of Duty publisher and all. And given the contract Microsoft agreed to with Nintendo to bring a Call of Duty game to its next-gen hardware. The email comes from Armin Zerza who mentions that it would also be nice to prove out nice and early that the Switch 2’s hardware would allow Activision to make something compelling for the unit.

“Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4 / Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well,” the email says. Zerza also expresses the importance of getting their hands on early development hardware prototypes to make this happen. Nintendo is reportedly planning to launch the Switch 2 sometime in the second half of 2024. It was also reported that a demo of the new console was shown off behind closed doors at Gamescom to detail the capabilities of the hardware.
