The Lord of the Rings franchise is a wildly popular one, and it spawned several video games. There are already two games planned to launch this month, but that’s not enough for Amazon. According to Engadget, there’s a new Lord of the Rings MMO in the works.
There are two Lord of the Rings titles that fans should be excited about this month. Firstly, there is the Lord of the Rings: Gollum. As expected, this is going to be the story of one of the series’ most iconic characters. It’s set to launch on May 25th for the PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox series X/S. There’s a Switch version set to launch later this year. as well.
Next, we have an MMO called Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-Earth. This is a large multiplayer game where you can assemble a team of iconic Lord of the Rings characters and battle it out against the forces of evil. This game launched on May 10th, so you can download it today.
There’s a new Lord of the Rings MMO in the works
Right now, we don’t know much about this game. It’s in early development, so won’t get details for several months at least. What we do know is that Amazon will be taking over the development with its new World Studios.
This studio is responsible for the Amazon MMORPG New World which launched back in September 2021. Unfortunately, the game suffered multiple delays, and its player base has diminished greatly since launch.
New World Studios is also responsible for the disaster that was Crucible. That third-person shooter was launched back in May of 2020 but was shut down in November of the same year.
So, New World does not seem to have the best track record with games, but it’s looking to redeem itself by delivering a new Lord of the Rings MMO. We expect the game to launch for PC and several consoles. There’s no word on exactly which consoles, but we can expect the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S. The jury is still out on the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
